Summer Traditions

i found out today. that when my mother was a little girl. she used to pick cherries in renwick.

just outside of blenheim.

this weekend we went camping in the sounds.

it was beautiful.

we also went cherry picking. for the first time. ever.

just outside of blenheim.

in renwick.

not knowing it was where my mother used to pick cherries.

i hope. in 15 years time. when our daughter comes home from wherever she has been.

exploring. adventuring. dreaming. learning.

that she says.

mum. i just want to go cherry picking. like we did every summer from when i was four.

please.

and we will get in our slightly beat up old car. anticipation hanging in the air.

returning home.

toungues stained red. and cherry juice lingering on our chins.

with cherries. still warm from the sun. bouncing along beside us for the journey back home again.
